Hartpury University professor presents at National Equine Forum

Hartpury University’s Professor of Equine Science, Professor Meriel Moore-Colyer, took centre stage at the prestigious National Equine Forum (NEF) in London on Thursday (6 March), delivering a compelling presentation on equine nutrition.

Her research, entitled “Finding the Best Forage for Your Horse,” explored the importance of assessing the types of forage fed to horses, and the effect on the horse’s gut microbiome when feeding soaked or steamed forage.

The National Equine Forum, a key annual gathering for equestrian professionals, scientists, and policymakers, provides a platform for the latest advancements in equine research and industry developments.

Professor Moore-Colyer’s research addressed a fundamental aspect of horse care – ensuring horses receive the most nutritionally balanced and appropriate forage for their individual needs. It also emphasised the importance of a gradual changes to any feeding regime to allow the gut to adapt safely.

Hartpury University, renowned for its cutting-edge equine research and world-class facilities, continues to be at the forefront of advancing equine science and welfare. The institution’s work in nutrition, biomechanics, saddle and bridle fit, and equine welfare supports both academic research and real-world application in the equestrian industry.

Hartpury recently presented research at the International Hoof-Care Summit in the United States, as well as announcing commissioned research to improve equine welfare in horse breeding.

Staff and students often work collaboratively across research activities helping students to make valuable industry contacts and gain career-advancing experience.
