Ruby studied a Level 3 National Diploma Animal Management at Hartpury. Ruby is now a Fisheries Policy Officer for the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Her role focuses on trying to minimise the environmental impact of fishing activities at a policy level in Scotland. She believes fisheries policy is a key area in marine environmental management.
Ruby's Hartpury Experience
"My Animal Management course gave me the opportunity to learn in a different way and prepared me for university life.
I gained practical experience in the large animal collection on campus, and outside of college through work placements. This made me more employable because I had a range of transferrable skills that are valuable to the industry.
The lecturers were amazing and encouraged me to do things that I may not have had the confidence to do otherwise – including applying for my degree.
I’d already done some volunteer work at a veterinary practice and wildlife rehabilitation hospital, but working with Arctic Quest for my placement was something completely different. The working huskies are used for husky rides, racing, team building exercises, outreach and dog training for people who would like to teach their dogs to mush. I learnt everything from understanding animal behaviour to customer service."
Developing Industry Connections
"After leaving Hartpury, I secured my dream place at a Russell Group university, studying Marine Biology, and then continued to specialise with a masters degree in Marine Systems and Policies.
I’ve had some amazing volunteering opportunities including; turtle conservation in Greece, working with Greenpeace and the Fisheries and Oceans department in Brussels, and conserving Manx shearwater, Skomer voles and seals on Skomer Island with the South and West Wales Wildlife Trust.
My hope is to continue working towards ocean conservation, restoration and enhancement – so we can all enjoy the benefits that our seas provide in the long term."
